Demon Slayer is part of our list of anime to watch.
The success of this Series
Transposing a manga into an anime is never an easy task; even when the source material is top-notch, some anime often fail to hold a candle to the manga quality, becoming muddled, full of filler, or simply failing to reach the level of the original comic. This situation has happened with many of the Japanese comics as in the recent case of Promise Neverland, an anime created from the manga of the same name, which, however, never managed to have a reliable and level-headed anime adaptation because of the disastrous second season.
One of the strengths of this series is definitely the characters. You can find an overview in our article: Demon Slayer Characters
This, however, is definitely not the case with the anime of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no yaiba, which, for those who do not know, can be viewed on Crunchyroll, VVVID, Netflix and Amazon Prime. This animated series is a masterpiece on a visual level, with stunningly beautiful drawings, animation, and special effects. This, along with a solid plot full of twists and turns, is probably the secret to the success of this series, which has made Tanjiro’s adventures popular all over the world.
The Plot of Demon Slayer in Brief (Without Spoilers)
This shonen anime is set in Japan in the Taishō period, an era from July 30, 1912 to December 25, 1926, coinciding with the reign of Emperor Taishō Tennō. The narrative plot revolves around Tanjiro Kamado, the elder brother of a fatherless family, who lives by selling coal to support his family consisting of his mother and younger siblings. One morning, after spending the night away from home, Tanjiro returns home to find that his family has been brutally exterminated by a demon. Upset by the incident, Tanjiro begins to search one by one for all of his family members and finds his younger sister Nezuko who is the only survivor, and he senses something different about her-the girl has become a demon due to her injuries.
Demons are creatures that feed mainly on humans, are usually much stronger and more physically fit than humans, and can develop unique and very special powers. In addition to these characteristics, demons suffer severe injuries if they see the sun or light rays strike their skin. Nezuko proves to be different from the other demons early on, as she seems to be the only demon who has no intention of feeding on other people or her brother. However, it has one characteristic in common with the other demons, which is that it suffers from sunlight, and for this reason, Tanjiro carries it during the day in a wooden trunk that he constantly carries on his back.
Tanjiro observing his younger sister’s behavior becomes convinced that she can return to the way she was before. It also reflects on the fact that the other demons have far worse intentions than Nezuko’s and thus could hurt and kill other human beings, as tragically happened to her family.
The Protagonist’s Adventure
From here begins the protagonist’s adventure to find a way to make Nezuko human again, and to do so, Tanjiro will have to train hard to join the demon hunters, namely the Demon Slayers.
During their journey, Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko will meet many other characters, some of whom will be other demon hunters who will join the adventure to go in search of the lord of all demons, Muzan Kibutsuji. This most powerful demon commands all the demons in existence, and among his subordinates are the Crescent Moons and the Waning Moons. In this anime, the demon lord created demons from his own blood, and by killing him, all others should also cease to exist or at least return to their previous form, the human form. Tanjiro therefore, wants to get to fight Muzan and kill him, that way perhaps his sister Nezuko could return to normalcy and continue living a life as a human being.
Seasons already released and future seasons
The impact of this anime has been enormous worldwide. And it has enabled the manga to sell millions of copies worldwide. As well as related products such as merchandising, video games, and movies.
It has been a huge success, but despite this, mangaka Koyoharu Gotōge has decided to end the manga with a total of only 23 volumes in 2020. This decision appears to be final, but there is always the possibility that the manga will continue in the future, somewhat as is happening with Hunter X Hunter.
After the first season of the series aired in 2019, consisting of 26 episodes, a sequel film based on the Mugen Train saga was born. In which Tanjiro and his companions find themselves facing a frighteningly strong demon. The hugely successful film was also followed by the second season, released on October 10, 2021. Demon Slayer 2 follows the events of Tanjiro and his companions in the red-light district. Where they will hunt down some demons that torment the inhabitants. After this story arc, a third season has been confirmed for release. That will go on to continue the plot with a new story arc, that of Sword Village.
How many volumes of the Manga?
Since the manga consists of only 23 volumes, it is very likely that Demon Slayer will end in 4 seasons or 5 seasons total, which would bring the anime to have a total of more than 80 episodes. Alternatively, it is possible that after the fourth or fifth season, a concluding film will be created in which the final events of the series will be shown. At present, however, there is still no official word on how many seasons there will be and whether there will be canonical movies.
We are sure that it will go to at least season 4, most likely even season 5, since season 3 will cover manga volumes 12 through 15. After this season there will still be 8 volumes to create episodes and seasons, and using them all at once in one season would not be a great marketing idea. To take a well-known example, the final season of Attack of the Giants, one of the best anime in recent years, was divided into 3 parts as if it were three different seasons, so it is realistic to think that Demon Slayer may follow this pattern for the conclusion.
The Swordsman Village story arc is too long in the manga to produce only 12 episodes. But not enough to produce 24 (unless fillers or extra content is added). The manga adaptation will still take some time, as half of the volumes are currently missing, so the final season of the anime will most likely be released in at least three to four years.
The order in which to look at the seasons
After this broad overview of the seasons, this section is aimed primarily at those interested in watching this anime from scratch. As we know the order in which to view seasons in some Japanese series can be complicated to follow.
In any case, if you have not seen Demon Slayer, here is what viewing order to follow so that you can enjoy it properly.
Horde of vision:
- Demon Slayer 1 – The first season of the anime, consisting of 26 episodes, where the story of Tanjiro and his training to become a demon slayer begins.
- Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Ressha-hen – The movie of the Mugen Train story arc, it is a canonical movie that continues the narrative from the time of the conclusion of the first season.
- Demon Slayer 2 – The second season of the anime, consisting of 18 episodes, based on the Mugen Train story arc and the Entertainment District story arc.
- Demon Slayer 3 – The new season of the upcoming anime, which we will discuss in the next section.
Where to watch it for free on Streaming?
If we want to watch these seasons and the movie from the comfort of our home streaming for free, we can rely on Crunchyroll. Where we will find all the anime episodes divided by story arcs, and clearly also the Mugen Train movie. Alternatively, we can use the well-known anime site VVVID, where we will find the first season.
As for subscription services, the first season of the anime is featured on both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. On Prime Video we will also find the canonical movie sequel to the first season.
Demon Slayer Season 3 – plot
The third season of Demon Slayer will clearly be a continuation of the second season. After the Entertainment District story arc is over, the new story arc will be the Sword Village story arc.
As for the manga, this story arc covers chapters 100 to 127. These chapters will be used to create at least 12 episodes of the anime. But we don’t yet know how many episodes there will be in total, probably between 15 and 22. Season 3 will include manga volumes 12 through 15. So after this new season there will still be as many as 8 volumes left to be transposed into anime. Without making spoilers about the plot of this new story arc, we can say that it will be based on Tanjiro and his sword. Which was quite badly damaged during last seasons’ clashes. Our protagonist will head to a swordsman village so as to have it repaired by an experienced sword master.
Tanjiro in this season will be joined by a new character, namely Genya, another demon hunter who will fight together with the protagonist in the clashes of this saga.
Demon Slayer Season 3 – Production & Trailer
As for the production of the new season, there will again be director Haruo Sotozaki and character designer Akira Matsushima, who is also the animation director of Ufotable studio. In addition to the two, the main cast will also return in their respective roles.
The confirmation of the new season was also followed by the release of the official Season 3 trailer, which can be found on YouTube. The trailer shows a scroll containing numerous scenes from past seasons and the Mugen train movie. Then a new scroll containing the third season. There are very few unseen scenes in this trailer. We can see blacksmiths wearing masks as they are forging a sword and the faces of the pillar of mist and another female character. The trailer ends with Tanjiro charging a sword stroke.
Demon Slayer Season 3 – Release Date & Where to verder it
As for official information, we know that Demon Slayer 3, like the previous two seasons, will definitely be viewable on Crunchyroll.
As for the release date, there is currently no official information and there is no confirmed release windowyet. Considering the studio’s production speed and the difference of a few years between the release of season 1 and season 2, with the movie in between, it seems very likely that we will see this season released in 2023. The Ufotable studio is doing a great job in this production, probably the new story arc will be one of the best in the animated series. Therefore, we expect you to keep the agreed-upon timeframe without acting in haste, so as to produce a high-quality product.
Usually new seasons come out in a period of 12 to 18 months after confirmation. Therefore, we can say that the new season will be released in the second half of 2023. Probably sometime between July and November (unforeseen events and delays permitting). We can consider these statements as probable guesses, for now we only have to wait for official news from the producers of the series.
