Sony’s new revolution has just begun , and it will change the way a great many gamers play games forever. We are talking about the new PlayStation Plus, the subscription service that allows gamers playing on Sony consoles to take advantage of some extra features and additional options. This subscription offers many interesting services, some indispensable if you play video games that have extensive use of online PVP or PVE systems or if you are interested in competitive gaming. This is a necessary service to enjoy online multiplayer with most titles, but it also allows you to get exclusive discounts and free games each month.
The new Playstation Plus is based on 3 different subscription plans that contain very interesting additional services, and it seems to be a really important and decisive answer to rival company Microsoft and its subscription service, namely Xbox Game Pass.
As Jim Ryan, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, states: “The global launch of the new PlayStation Plus represents a massive evolution of our subscription service, and we are delighted that fans around the world can now enjoy hundreds of fantastic games available in the catalog. The vast amount of content is what makes PlayStation Plus unique, and the service will continue to expand with new monthly game offerings that include some of the most celebrated and beloved titles on PlayStation platforms. We are truly grateful for the passionate support of our PlayStation community over the years.”
The launch of the new service had already taken place in other regions; it appeared in Japan on May 23, 2022, and in the United States on June 13. As of Thursday, June 23, it is also available in Europe, and all European players can access the revamped service with the three subscription levels. The new subscription contains in a single service all the benefits of the old services, both PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now, while also introducing new features and two very large libraries of titles that subscribers can play for free.
In this article we will look at all the new features and what is left of the old subscription, plus we will take an in-depth look at the two catalogs containing free games for subscribers.
The three subscription plans and their characteristics
Let’s start from the beginning, there are three subscription plans and they have some features in common, they are as follows:
- PlayStation Plus Essential
- PlayStation Plus Extras
- PlayStation Plus Premium
PlayStation Plus Essential
PS Plus Essential has the same benefits currently available to subscribers of the old PlayStation Plus, and is the subscription that everyone who already has an active PS Plus subscription will have. In fact, the price is the same as the old subscription, costing €8.99 per month, €24.99 every three months or €59.99 per year. In terms of service content, PS Plus Essential allows us to:
- Get the free games released each month by Sony.
- Being able to use online multiplayer in most titles.
- Have access to exclusive discounts on titles and DLC at any time of the year.
- Download some exclusive content such as DLC, loot packs, skin packs and rewards for free.
- Use a cloud storage system, so that game save data up to as much as 100 GB for PS4 and PS5 can be saved in a virtual database that we can use on any Sony console.
- Use Share Play, which allows us to show our gameplay to our friends or surrender the joypad virtually to one of our friends, allowing them to play our game.
- Have access to the PlayStation Plus Collection, a library of 20 triple-A games accessible to players in possession of the PlayStation 5.
- Use the in-game guide, a new tool that allows us to receive advice at some particularly difficult times in a video game, the guide contains very useful tips and also short video tutorials.
- Take advantage of free shipping when we purchase games directly from the PlayStation site.

Playstation Plus Extra
PlayStation Plus Extra, i.e., the second subscription level, contains the same benefits as the Essential plan, but gives us the ability to use a huge catalog of PS4 and PS5 games. PS Plus Extra is priced at €13.99 per month, €39.99 every three months, or €99.99 per year. The catalog offered includes titles created by major iconic productions as well as innovative independent games, with new titles being added regularly.
At the time of release, the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog includes up to 400 titles that can be downloaded for free by subscribers. This leads to new gaming experiences, new genres to discover, and active and renewed online communities of users to play with. This library of games will be expanded gradually by Sony, in the style of rival service Xbox Game Pass, and will also release titles that will debut directly on the service. One of these is Annapurna Interactive’s mysterious and interesting Stray, which will be released on July 19, and in which we will impersonate a stray cat in a cyberpunk world populated by robots.
Playstation Plus Premium
As for the third and final subscription level, called PlayStation Plus Premium, in addition to offering the same benefits as the Extra plan, it allows us to have some amazing additional items. This subscription is Sony’s most comprehensive and expensive, priced at €16.99 per month, €49.99per quarter, or €119.99 per year. With PS Plus Premium we will be able to access the magnificent catalog of classics, get special trial versions of great games already released and before release, and have access to the old PlayStation Now benefits of playing video games from the two catalogs via streaming. In addition, we will also be able to play the titles in the two catalogs on PC!
The catalog of classics will drive retrogaming lovers crazy, as it allows its subscribers to play 340 more games pulled from the catalogs of old PlayStation consoles. These games can be either downloaded to the console or played via streaming, contains some of the best titles from the past of the first PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PS4 and PSP.
We can also stream games from the game catalog and the PlayStation Plus classics catalog to our PC on demand. We also have the ability to save progress in the cloud and pick up the game from where we left off on our PS4 or PS5 console, with the ability to connect DualShocks to the PC.
The New PS Plus Extra Games Catalog
This catalog has about 400 titles, and contains the greatest hits from PlayStation Studios and third parties. Games can be downloaded to one’s console or played via streaming (with a PS Plus Premium subscription). It seems possible that the list of titles in this catalog is subject to change over time, so some titles will probably be removed and added in the future.
This library of games certainly features many top-quality titles, so trying the service for a few months allows us to play some of the best video games of recent years. Some regions will have different games from other regions’ catalogs, clearly in this article we will focus on the list of European ones.

The catalog of classics really contains a lot of games from past generations, most of the games belong to the last Sony consoles before PS5, namely the PS3 and PS4. It seems to us, however, that the PS Plus Premium subscription level is a top-notch service and well worth the expense, including being able to play these titles conveniently via streaming and PC.
Analysis of subscription plans
After analyzing the features and additional services of the various tiers of the new PS Plus, we can say that this revolution will surely be a huge hit among players and the service will effectively rival the Xbox Game Pass.
As for the individual subscription plans, the PlayStation Plus Essential seems best suited for gamers who only want to take advantage of online multiplayer and have no interest in the two catalogs offered.
Things change with the PlayStation Plus Extra, which seems to be the perfect compromise in value for money. The presence of the PlayStation Plus Catalog is a determining factor; it contains very interesting games indeed, and it is virtually certain that a great many of those titles have not all been played by even the most experienced players.
The PlayStation Plus Premium is also an excellent subscription plan with unique features, dedicated primarily to those who want to play streaming and PC titles, but also to those who are very interested in the catalog of classics. This catalog is very unique, as it contains many games from older generations, certainly perfect for nostalgic gamers and those who want to replay titles from their childhood.
