Intro

We have reached the conclusion of the football year 2022, a year full of surprises and great excitement that also saw the stunning World Cup final between Argentina and France in one of the most beautiful finals in recent years.

For EA, the time has come again to unveil the most anticipated event of every Ultimate Team edition, that of the awarding of the best players of the calendar year, in this case, of the entire 2022. We are talking about the Team of The Year, the team that features some of the strongest cards from each edition of Ultimate Team. Like every edition of FIFA, these cards are the ones that will disrupt the market and completely revolutionize the current meta, as they are extremely enhanced versions of already very strong players.

These cards allow you to celebrate the journey of the players who have most excelled in their skills throughout the calendar year. Once again this year, EA Sports has decided to have some really strong TOTY cards appear in packages and on the market, which will be highly coveted for the lineups used by players. These cards give a huge upgrade to the attributes of the players who get them, much higher than a regular In Form or special card.

The promotional period will last from Jan. 20 until Jan. 27, during which time a number of teams composed of strong special cards will be released:

Team of the Year Final XI: available in packages from Jan. 25 to Feb. 1, 2023

Before proceeding to analyze the very strong special players, let us briefly look at how these cards and the new TOTY Icons cards work, and the process that leads to player selection.

Voting process and operation TOTY cards

Every year from FIFA 17 onward, you can cast your vote to choose which players to include in the team of the year. Usually a few weeks earlier the list of nominees is provided, from which the top 11 players can be selected. This year there are 100 nominees and they were unveiled on Jan. 9; it was possible to vote for them on the EA Sports website until Jan. 16.

Until FIFA 17, TOTYs were not voted on, and the Team of the Year corresponded to the same official team selected by soccer players around the world from the FIFA World XI award, issued by FIFA.

The final results are determined by an algorithm that combines user votes with those cast by EA Sports based on some undisclosed criteria. The top 11 soccer players selected for Team Of The Year were unveiled on Jan. 19.

TOTYs are cards that provide a very strong enhancement based on a player’s base card. Players selected to become TOTYs all have greatly enhanced values and can have different secondary roles and enhanced characteristics. These special cards therefore often do not change the player’s style of play, making them strongly enhanced versions of the basic cards. These cards are not dynamic cards like OTWs or RTTKs, so none of these cards improve based on the performance of the associated player.

Sometimes it happens that a player’s role, stats, characteristics, and traits are changed based on achievements during the year. For example, with regard to players who have scored many goals, shooting is greatly enhanced. So you always have to take a look at the different features that can make these special cards even stronger and more usable.

Let’s look at an example to better understand, Jude Bellingham’s TOTY card starts with a strong upgrade to all other attributes and has an impressive +11 overall. In fact, compared with the basic card, he has +10 to defense, +12 to passing and +11 to shooting, dribbling, speed and physique. This card has unchanged characteristics like most TOTY players.

What’s New in FUT 23: The TOTY Icons

This year EA decided to turn the tables again by releasing a new set of strong cards dedicated to legendary players from times past, namely icons, we are talking about the TOTY Icons. This is a first since we have never seen something like this in FIFA Ultimate Team.

TOTY icons are players who once belonged to the best eleven of the year and would have received a TOTY card in FIFA then. These TOTY Icons, however, will not add new icons to the roster already on FUT, but are enhanced versions of icons already in this edition. EA decided to include these new cards to celebrate some of the greatest players to ever play the game, and they would be eligible for Team of the Year awards.

The new Team released on January 20 at 7 p.m. along with TOTY’s Team Final XI includes 14 iconic players. These cards confer an upgrade over the Prime Icons that were released a few weeks ago. The operation of the enhancement is the same as that applied to TOTY cards, these cards will then have all enhanced values and may have different secondary roles and enhanced characteristics. So they are endgame cards, that is, cards so strong that we can use them for as long as we play FUT 23.

Now that we have clarified these concepts, let us move on to the analysis of all the special papers in this event.

Player Analysis Team of The Year Final XI

Now that we are familiar with how these special cards work, let’s take a look at the first release of the players who were chosen and, most importantly, let’s analyze them. The first release was released on January 20 and contains 10 movement players and a goalkeeper forming a sensational 4-3-3. The cards in question come out in wards, first the strikers, then the midfielders and then the defenders and the goalkeeper, eventually for a period of time it will be possible to find the entire TOTY lineup in the packets.

In this team we can observe a great prevalence of players from Real Madrid (fielding as many as 4) and Paris Saint Germain (fielding 3 players). The remaining 4 players belong to 4 different teams, namely Milan, Liverpool, Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund. Perhaps this team does not fully reflect the performance of last year’s top players and teams, but still, these are the players who got the most votes from EA Sports and gamers. Of note is the presence of a Serie A player who has been missing from the TOTY starting 11 for some editions, namely Theo Hernandez.

Obviously these cards, like all TOTY cards will have a very high value on the market in terms of credits, so unless you are a FUT millionaire it will be very difficult to buy them. One will then have to hope to find them in the packages by taking advantage of the targets and SBCs. These cards, as we can see even just from their overall are among the strongest in the game, so obviously they are all recommended cards in competitive play.

Let us now see a brief review of all these strong players:

Lionel Messi (98) – Let’s start right away with the strongest overall card in the TOTYs, which belongs to PSG’s phenomenal Argentine right winger, fresh from winning the World Cup and with a glorious career ending ahead of him. This card is currently his strongest version and is the highest rated card in the game along with the Prime version of Pelé. In this card its role is AD and it can also do ED. He has crazy values for speed, shooting and passing (93, 98 and 97), but his best value is dribbling at the highest limit (99). He has 4 stars in both weak foot and skill moves, and in game he is one of the best players in dribbling and outside shots. He has as many as 11 in game stats with 99 and this makes him incredibly strong and buggy. A clearly phenomenal card and highly recommended at any level of play.

Kylian Mbappé (97) – The other star of this edition of the World Cup, who has a career full of trophies and phenomenal performances ahead of him, could not be missed. PSG’s star French striker is capable of dragging his teams in any competition, and this card is sensational and his strongest version yet. It only takes a quick glance at his card to see that he is the strongest striker in FUT and one of the strongest cards in the game. In this paper his role is ATT but he can also do AS, and TA. He has a borderline value for speed (99) and devastating values for dribbling and shooting (98 and 96), as well as very good passing and physical values (85 and 87). He has 5 skill move stars and 4 weak foot stars, is 6’2″ tall and is one of the most buggy strikers in the game, able to win rebounds with ease and score from almost any position. This card is sure to be a nightmare for anyone who finds it against, and at the time of release it has a cost of 9.5 million credits, making it the most expensive card in the game. Obviously highly recommended at any level of play.

Karim Benzema (97) – Couldn’t miss “Karim The Dream” among the top players of this Team of the Year, this is his third and much-deserved special release. An incredible year for Real Madrid’s phenomenal French striker, he was one of the best in the world and won a much-deserved Ballon d’Or. His is one of the strongest cards in the game, it has very high values and therefore very high in game stats. His three highest stats are those of speed, dribbling and shooting (92, 94 and 97), he also has excellent values of passing and physical (90 and 90). He has 4 stars of skill moves and as many as 5 stars of weak foot, can do ATT and AT and is 6’8″ tall. He has all the makings of one of the best forwards in FUT, in game he is very strong in all attacking situations and also very buggy in rebounds. A phenomenal card for competitive and online matches.

Kevin De Bruyne (97) – Another player who could not be missed on this team is Manchester City’s Belgian midfielder. This player is the centerpiece of Guardiola’s game, and again this year he has showcased all his crystalline talent. Obviously this player is the best midfielder in the English league, and he has very solid and balanced stats, which is why he is currently ranked 3rd among the players with the most in game stats on FUT. A devastating card, especially offensively since it has crazy stats. His three highest values are in dribbling, shooting and passing (94, 94 and 98), he also has very good values in speed and physique (85 and 86). One of the most passable players in the game, buggy and with trequartista characteristics, he also has 4 stars of skill moves and as many as 5 stars of weak foot, can play CC and COC and is 1.81 m tall. A player to have on any Premier League roster if you can afford it, whether in competitive or online matches.

Luka Modrić (96) – This player is one of the strongest midfielders of the last two decades, so it is not surprising that we almost finished another year at the highest level. Real Madrid’s 2018 Ballon d’Or winner Croatian central midfielder receives the strongest card in the Spanish league. This card is phenomenal and ranks second among players with the highest in-game stats in the entire FUT player database (first place belongs to Gullit TOTY Icon). He has all stats starting at 83 and the best stats are dribbling and passing (both 97), he also has very good values for speed and defense (both 85). He has 4 stars in both weak foot and skill moves, is 6’2″ tall and as a role he can only play CC. A sensational player in game, complete and buggy recommended at all levels of play.

Jude Bellingham (95) – Here we are looking at Borussia Dortmund’s new 2003-class English central midfielder card, the strongest card in the Bundesliga, and we are not exaggerating. After a banner year, Bellingham gets a card that has all stats starting at a minimum of 88, and in fact we find him in fourth place for in game stats. His highest stats are dribbling, passing and physical (96, 92 and 92), he also has 90 defense, really phenomenal. He has 4 stars of both skill moves and weak foot, solid workrates (High/High), is 1.86 m tall and can play CC the ES and CDC. A stratospheric in-game player, capable of excelling in every fundamental and in every part of the field, buggy in contrasts and rebounds. An obviously highly recommended card at any level of play.

Virgil Van Dijk (96) – Let’s move on to the defenders and see the one with the highest rating on this team namely Liverpool’s Dutch central defender, who has had a good year. This player is currently the best central defender in the English league on FUT. He has a very high velocity value (88) for such a physically strong player and so tall, and in fact has a very high physical value (94). His highest stats, however, are his defense stats, which have an absurd 97 and allow him to be one of the best central defenders in the game. In addition to these excellent premises, he is a player who in game seems even stronger than in past years, especially on Next Gen he is very strong at defensive automatisms and takes the ball away from opponents practically by himself. In addition to this, he is an impressive 1.93 m behemoth. And it also has good stats of technical values. A devastating defender and highly recommended both in competitive and online matches.

Theo Hernández (94) – We are already on the fourth special release for Milan’s strong French left-back, one of the protagonists of the Rossoneri’s 19th Scudetto. His senior year was of the highest level, as seen by the many goals and assists he scored in the Milan and France jerseys, some of his plays making soccer history. Obviously this player is currently the strongest left fullback in the game, has all stats starting at a minimum of 80 and thus has very high in game stats (he is in the top 15 of the FUT database). He has very strong speed, defense and physical values (98, 88 and 92), he also has very solid dribbling and passing values (90 and 88). He has only 3 stars of both skill moves and weak feet, is 1.84 tall and has very offensive workrates (High/Medium), which are useful given his characteristics. A sensational in-game player, very strong for both Serie A and French player-based roses, as he combines speed with excellent defense and has incredible physicality as well. A phenomenal card in competitive and online matches.

Éder Militão (94) – Let’s look at another player from Real Madrid, the 2022 Champions League winning team, and see the new card of the Brazilian central defender class of ’98. An extraordinarily strong card crowning a great year played at a high level. This is definitely one of the best central defenders in the game, if not the best. He has devastating stats of speed, defense and physique (90, 95 and 92), also has good dribbling and passing values and is 1.86 m tall. In game he is very strong, mainly because he is much faster than paper and is able to take the ball away from anyone, very buggy in slips, automatic counter-attacks and very strong in head too. A very strong card both in competitive and online matches, it also has a very good the link with Brazilian players.

Achraf Hakimi (94) – Let us now analyze the last card of the defenders, needless to say that this is also a sensational card. The player in question is PSG’s Moroccan right-back, who becomes the strongest right-back in FUT with this new version. His card obviously has the highest value of speed (99), to which he matches very high and solid stats. His high physical and defensive values (90 and 91) make him an almost impossible player to dribble through, so forget about trying to outrun him at speed. In addition to this, his stats are so high and balanced that they also allow him to make dangerous offensive forays on the flank. He has all stats starting at a minimum of 81 and is therefore one of the players with the most in-game stats in the game. He has 4 stars of both skill moves and weak feet, offensive workrates (High/Medium) and is 1.81 m tall.

Thibaut Courtois (95) – First special release for Real Madrid’s Belgian goalkeeper, one of the major architects of his club’s great year. This year the Galacticos’ defender has conceded very few goals and scored a lot of clean sheets in La Liga. This is undoubtedly the strongest goalkeeper in the game at the moment, as he has really strong stats. His three highest values are those of reflexes, grip and positioning (97, 95 and 95), he also has a very good value of diving (90) and is a very tall goalkeeper, measuring an impressive 1.99m. The strengths of this player are his great responsiveness and his strength in exits, given that he is very tall he finds himself facilitated in any kind of saves both on dives in high shots and in low catch saves. A very strong player for both competitive and online matches, he is also the TOTY card that costs the least, a must-have for La Liga roses.

12th Man Team of the Year

Following the release of the Final XI of TOTYs, FUT gamers were asked to vote for the 12th Man of the Year Team. There were 3 candidates namely Federico Valverde, Joao Cancelo and Erling Haaland.

Fans voted through FIFA Ultimate Team, where Haaland received more than 60 percent of the votes, outpacing the other two players. There was little doubt about the winner, as in 2022, Haaland’s statistics were astonishing with an impressive 37 goals in 32 games. Haaland started his Manchester City career with a bang, breaking a lot of records with his first appearances in the English league. EA SPORTS then confirmed Manchester City’s Erling Haaland as the 12th man on the FIFA 23 Team of the Year, taking the final spot on the TOTY 2023 roster, let’s see his new card now:

Erling Haaland (96) – The 12th man is a monstrous card added to the TOTYs and it is that of the world’s strongest first forward, Manchester City’s Norwegian giant. This star player has been the author of many goals and hat tricks and we are only halfway through the season, he has already scored 25 goals in the Premier League, more than the last 4 league top scorers in the past 4 seasons. His new card is that of a phenomenal and complete striker, fast and physically strong. His stats are really devastating for his ATT role, he has very high values for speed, dribbling and physical (96, 88 and 94), as well as a devastating 96 shooting. He has 4 stars of skill moves and 4 stars of weak foot, has an extremely buggy and illegal shot, which allows him to break through the goal with any conclusion. In addition, he is lenghty and 1.95 m tall. so he is perfect for the Next Gen meta and is definitely one of the strongest attackers in the game. An obviously highly recommended card at any level of play.

Let us now look at a brief review of all these strong icons:

Ruud Gullit (94) – Let’s see the new version of the legendary Dutch midfielder and striker best known for his time at AC Milan. This player was part of the famous Dutch trio with Rijkaard and Van Basten in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with whom he won many prestigious trophies including 2 Champions Leagues and 3 Scudetti. Undoubtedly this player would have made it onto one of the TOTY teams of those years, and the card he receives is the strongest card in the game. He is a complete and outstanding player and the one with the highest in-game stats in the FUT database. His highest stats are shooting, passing and physical (93, 93 and 91), he also has 90 in dribbling and 87 in speed, very impressive. He has 4 stars of skill moves and as many as 5 stars of weak foot, offensive workrates (High/Medium), is 1.91 m tall and can play AT, ATT the COC and CC. A stratospheric in-game player, capable of excelling in every fundamental and in every part of the field, also very strong in tackles and rebounds and physically dominant. This is one of the strongest cards in FUT history and is therefore highly recommended at any level of play.

David Beckham (94) – Let’s see another former Milan player of great class and depth. Beckham is most famous for his technical plays and precise punts under the crossbar; he played mostly for Real Madrid and Manchester United with whom he also won the Champions League in 1999. This player’s card is that of a director who is technically skilled, fast and has a great shot. He has high stats in speed, dribbling and shooting (91, 91 and 88), but his best value is in passing almost to the maximum limit (98). He has 4 stars of both skill moves and weak feet, solid workrates (High/High), is 6’2″ tall and can be ED, CC and AD. A player who should be used as a central midfielder, although he also does his job on the flank, but in the middle of the field he uses his passing skills to the best advantage. Card obviously highly recommended at any level of play.

Javier Zanetti (93) – Also famous for having a past in Serie A, the Argentine right-back was an Inter Milan player for 20 years from 1995 to 2014. Zanetti was the historic captain of Internazionale in Milan, a loyal and fair player capable of dragging his teammates and making everyone respect him, he was one of the protagonists of the legendary Triplete in 2010. This player’s card is that of a defensively skilled fullback, fast and with great passing. His best stats are those of speed, defense and passing (all 90), he also has very good dribbling and physical values (86 and 84). He has 3 stars of skill moves and 4 stars of weak feet, is 5’7″ tall and can do TD, CC, ADA and TS. A very balanced, strong and ductile player in the game who can be used either as a fullback on either flank or as a midfielder. Card obviously recommended at any level of play.

Andrea Pirlo (93) – Let’s take a quick look at another player famous for his past in Serie A, the Italian central midfielder is a former AC Milan Juve and Inter. Pirlo had an extraordinary career and managed to win many important trophies including the 2006 World Cup with Italy, 2 Champions Leagues and 2 European Super Cups with AC Milan, and 6 Scudetti with Milan and Juve. This player’s card is that of a complete director with great passing. His best stats are dribbling, shooting and passing (93, 84 and 96), he also has a good 82 in speed. He has as many as 5 stars of skill moves and 4 stars of weak feet, is 5’7″ tall and can play CC and CDC. A very balanced player and especially buggy in game since his defensive and technical values seem much higher. Strong card and recommended in online and competitive matches.

Robert Pirès (92) – This icon is famous for playing mainly in 3 of the major European leagues, namely Ligue 1, Premier League and La Liga. Pirès is mainly remembered with the shirts of Metz, Marseille, Arsenal and Villareal, he won some important trophies such as the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 European Championship with France and two English Championships with Arsenal. The card of this player is that of a skilled outside and advanced midfielder in the offensive phase is the best ever version of this icon. His best stats are those of speed, dribbling and passing (90, 92 and 89), he also has a good 86 shooting. He has as many as 5 stars of skill moves and 4 stars of weak feet, is 6’8″ tall and can be an ES, ED, COC and AS. A very balanced and buggy player in game since his technical values are high and for the first time he has very good characteristics. Strong card and recommended in online and competitive matches, usable on both sides and in the three-quarter.

Nemanja Vidic (91) – The last player in this first team is a very strong player, we are talking about the Serbian central defender famously famous for tying his career with Manchester United for 9 years from 2006 to 2014. Vidic distinguished himself as one of the best central defenders of his generation, with the red devils he won major trophies such as 5 English championships, the Champions League in 2008 and the World Club Championship in the same year. This player’s card is that of a very skilled defender defensively, very fast and with a great physique. His best stats are those of speed, defense and physique (84, 94 and 92). He is a central defender of great stature, he is 6’9″ tall and lenghty, so he is really fast and on Next Gen he is even faster. A very strong player in the game, both because of his speed and his ability to counter any attacker, he is also very strong up front and very strong physically. A very strong card and highly recommended at any level of play.

Player Analysis Icons TOTY Team 2

After seeing the first team of strong TOTY icons, let’s look at the second release of these new icons and more importantly let’s analyze them. The second release came out on January 24 and contains 6 movement players. The cards in question can be found in packets for only 72 hours, since they are extremely strong, the time period for finding them in packets is very limited.

In this team we can observe a great prevalence of players with very high overall ranging from a minimum of 91 to a maximum of 95. Obviously these cards, like the TOTY Icon cards already released will have a very high value on the market in terms of credits, so unless you are a FUT millionaire it will be very difficult to buy them. One will then have to hope to find them in the packages by taking advantage of the targets and SBCs. These cards, as we can see even just from their overall are among the strongest in the game, so obviously they are all recommended cards in competitive play.

Let us now look at a brief review of these strong new icons:

Ronaldinho (95) – Let’s take a look at the new version of one of the most beloved soccer players in the history of soccer, famous for mainly linking his career to Paris Saint Germain, Barcelona and Milan. This player is considered by many to be the essence of the game of soccer; he could entertain on the field and entertain all the fans who watched his over-the-top technique and brilliant plays that were never obvious. He won such major trophies as the 2002 World Cup with Brazil, the 2006 Champions League with Barcelona, and the 2005 Ballon D’Or. He is a complete player and is one of the strongest players in the game. His highest stats are those of speed, dribbling and shooting (94, 97 and 91), he also has 92 passing and 83 physical, very impressive. He has as many as 5 stars of skill moves and 4 stars of weak foot, offensive workrates (High/Low), is 6 feet tall and can be AS, ES and COC. A stratospheric player in the game, both on the flank and in the three-quarter, able to dribble past any defender with ease, buggy at winning rebounds and with a very strong shot. This is one of the strongest cards in FUT and is therefore highly recommended at any level of play.

Gerd Muller (95) – Let’s take a look at another legendary player famous for playing for 26 years for Bayern Munich between 1964 and 1979. Considered the greatest German center forward in history as well as among the most powerful of all time, Gerd Muller was a deadly bomber capable of scoring 730 goals in his career. He won as many as three Champions Leagues with Bayern and the World Cup and the European Championship with Germany, scoring the decisive goals in both finals. This player’s card is that of a lethal point man under goal, fast and strong technically. He has high stats of speed, dribbling and shooting (89, 90 and 95), he also has good physical value (78). He has 4 stars of both skill moves and weak foot, is 5’7″ tall and can do ATT and AT. A player who despite not being too tall, in the game is physically strong and able to win many rebounds, has excellent ball control and a killer shot with which he can score from any position. Very strong card and highly recommended at any level of play.

Alessandro Nesta (94) – Let’s look at another incredible player, this time an Italian defender, famous mainly for his past at AC Milan and Lazio. Nicknamed Perfect Storm, Nesta established himself as one of the strongest and most complete central defenders of his generation, won 2 Champions Leagues and a World Club Championship with AC Milan and the World Cup with Italy in 2006. This player’s card is that of a very skilled defender defensively, fast and with a great physique. His best stats are those of speed, defense and physique (80, 95 and 90). He is a very sturdy central defender, he is 6’87 m tall and lenghty, so he is really fast and on Next Gen he is even faster. A very strong player in the game, he has good speed and defensively he is monstrous, his slips are perfect and he is also strong in the head and physically. A really strong card and recommended at any level of play.

Claude Makelele (92) – Let’s look at another very strong player, this time a French midfielder, famous mainly for playing and winning trophies at clubs such as Nantes, PSG, Chelsea and Real Madrid. Distinguished by his grit, tactical intelligence and recovered balls, he won some important trophies in his career such as the 2002 Champions League with Real Madrid and 2 English championships with Chelsea. This player’s card is that of a defensively strong halfback. His best stats are those of speed, defense and physique (85, 90 and 89), he also has good values of dribbling and passing (both 83). He has 3 stars of skill moves and 4 stars of weak-footing, is 1.74 m tall and can play ED, CDC and CC. A very balanced and buggy player in game, he is a sort of enhanced Kanté who can root and intercept balls and get the action going again. Definitely very strong card for both online and competitive matches, usable as a CC or CDC.

Edwin Van Der Sar (92) – Let’s take a quick look at another player famous for his past in the Premier League and also in Serie A. Van Der Sar was a formidable goalkeeper who is remembered mainly in the shirts of Ajax and Manchester United, but he also played a few seasons at Fulham and Juventus. He had an extraordinary career and managed to win many important trophies, including the 1995 Champions League with Ajax, the 2008 Champions League and 4 English championships with Manchester United. This player’s card is that of one of the best goalkeepers in the game. His best stats are those of reflexes, grip and placing (90, 91 and 96), he also has a very good 87 diving. In game he is a very buggy goalkeeper skilled in all kinds of saves, he is 5’97 m tall. and this makes him very strong in exits and dives.
